Week 14 Discussion: Supply Chain Management

1. http://submarine-cable-map-2013.telegeography.com/

I choose a topic I was thrilled to learn about when I was studying electronics. Until I was deep into youtube videos one day I never realized that my ability to search the internet came more from underwater fiber optic cables and not satellite frequencies because our wifi access for phones and wireless devices are transmitted but all of these transmitters are in some way hard wired across the ocean. These cables are owned by various companies but all cross to main ports in all continents then go topical. Transatlantic cables are are the biggest player which is fitting because it is the main line for communication between Europe and the United States who are the biggest actors.

The key to assessment in the article I choose was making a company more efficient in changing times. The main player they are talking about in this article is IBM. It was evident in the beginning of the 2000's that the company needed a more simplified to communicate and make effective business happen. That is the IBM is suppose to stand for so it was no wonder they were ready at the drop of a hat to use social network analysis to improve their product and service. They took stock of their company and how it conglomerates run and corporate in order to make a their own blueprint for an efficient supply chain management. The key though to here was that they stated there isn't a cookie cutter version that is applicable to all business.

3. a. Walmart, Amazon, Eastern Mountain Supports, and Target

Product: Riding Gloves (Motorcycle)
 a. Quality: EMS
b. Price: Walmart
c. Suggestive Selling: Amazon
d. website features: Amazon
e. design of website: EMS
f. ease of website use: Amazon

Overall: Amazon

I have used all four retailers in my life but in more recent months the main two players have been EMS and Amazon. Amazon is the overall winner because it has endless options, quick ship time, good refund policy, and the easiest to use. However, EMS does have more of a niche with hip younger outdoors types that are willing or want to spend more on the same products. Furthermore, I do also like EMS because you accumulate points with every purchase that is 5-10% on a purchases that can be discounted later. Amazon doesn't give you money back but will deliver a product to your door in two days for $6.49 a month with PRIME-student.
