Week 10 Discussion

1Nate Davies   Jimmy Xu   Business 260 - Marketing   March 30th, 2018 Week 10 Discussion       What is the difference between secondary data and primary data (please refer to Chapter 9)? 2     The table on page 227 summarizes it the best. The difference and advantages of secondary data is that it time and is cheap. The disadvantage is that it can not be relevant. It is not always timely or from the original sources. The advantage and difference of primary data is that it is specific and designed to fit a certain problem. It offers behavioral insight. The downside and difference is that it is costly, time consuming, and requires intense training.    Please give an example of a Portland-based business that performs marketing research. How does this company collect marketing data? List sources (i.e., URL) if necessary. I      I work for the Press Hotel and use marketing data with the...
Nate Davies Jimmy Xu Business 260 - Marketing March 28th, 2018 I Love the Smell of Marketing Research in the Morning      The topic I found research on is called olfaction. This is science behind sensory marketing and more specifically smells. I find this to be important because research suggests that smells is the sense most tied to memory. Eric Spangenberg is a professor and researcher at Washington of University. Him and his team found ties  between scents, gender, and sales.   The first article attached below grabbed my attention due to its relationship with fitness. However, this type of marketing is everywhere. The independent variable in this study is the use of various smells. Men and women, for example, react to certain smells more than others. Vanilla has been found to be the most feminine where rose morca is the most masculine. The dependent variable in these studies is sales.       After finding the name of Mr. Spangen...

Let's Find Marketing Treasure: Perceptual Mapping & Google Maps

Nate Davies Jimmy Xu Business 260 - Marketing March 22nd, 2018 Let's Find Marketing Treasure: Perceptual Mapping      The most similar cereals are "healthy" cereals like Fiber one and Special K products. The other similarities are "tasty" or more marketed towards kids with cereals like Captain Crunch, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Reese's Puffs. Adult cereals tend to be marketed by health benefits versus children's cereal which are colorful and emulate flavors of candy and sugar.      The dimensions I choose is the dilemma of healthy versus taste. The health benefits were determined by protein, fiber, and sugar levels. The healthy options have high protein and fiber with low sugar. The tasty choices are based on high sugar levels and flavor appeal. Many people like chocolate and peanut butter more than cinnamon. In general, cereals are low in fat and are all fortified with micro-nutrients like vitamins and minerals so companies can make the cl...
Nate Davies Jimmy Xu Business 260 - Marketing March 2nd, 2018 Discussion Week 6 Section 1: 1. The difference between inbound and outbound marketing is how you attract customers. With inbound marketing, you create value in your brand which then in turn attracts customers with its allure in content and social media marketing. The outbound marketing or traditional marketing is when companies use mass media to get everyone to hear their pitch. This is a much more expensive means of marketing. The best would would be Coca-Cola. They air frequent commercials and  paid what I would assume to be the most expensive spot on the list. The top left is the first place Americans read. Coca-colas annual marketing budget was 3.3 billion in 2013 versus Visa who spent 112 million in 2014 on ads. Visa choose the last spot on the the list. http://adage.com/article/cmo-strategy/coca-cola-maintains-marketing-spend-amid-sluggish-demand/294251/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/192292/us-ad-...
